Marcs loan for Maggie Ens Art Exhibition

 —  —

Caelum Gallery, 508 - 526 W 26th St. Suite 315, NYNY 10001

Caelum Gallery is proud to present a show by the artist Maggie Ens.

MAGGIE ENS Awl And The Gift Of String Exhibition: Tues. Oct. 7 -Sat. Oct. 25, 2014 RECEPTION: Thursday Oct. 9, 6 - 8 p.m.

Caelum Gallery 508 - 526 W 26th St. Suite 315 NYNY 10001 http://www.caelumgallery.com/

“ Atlantia ” 2014 Mixed media. 24 x 24 inches Card Photograph by Edward Fausty

The title, 'Awl And The Gift of String' refers to the sharp tool used by craftspersons to pierce through favoring materials, allowing its users to pull needle and string through tiny holes, thereby tightly stringing separate parts closer to each other to form the whole. In a world hospitable to the creative spirit, i.e. the art world, "Gift" points to the symbolic recycling transformation connecting economics to esthetics and one's own personal, social and spiritual cohesion of art's gift exchange. Ens's combine art continues the tradition that was initiated by Kurt Schwitters, of recycling common discarded objects in artworks. The detritus, while retaining its identity, is translated into components of poetic tableau. The works are dense with man made objects such as crushed cans, toys and sequins that interact with natural items like sand, shells and plants (although they are artificial). All of this might easily result in chaos, but the artist achieves an unexpected order and a pleasing amalgamation.

Ens takes an outsider's delight in investing manic energy in fetishistic objects that make no concessions to polite artistic conventions. However, she does not try to hide the fact that she is a product of a sophisticated arts education. As wild and wooly as the works might be, most are presented in standard rectangular formats. There is a tension between tastefulness and the obvious happy accidents of trying this and that, such as in a work called 'Cultural Ecology' that features broken pieces of a plastic toy globe and an over-sized ladybug stuck in a web of frames, papered with Ens's junk mail scrawled with her own purple prose referencing climate change and the conservation of forests and wildlife.

The artist's most ambitious works incorporate strings of electric lights, and they break out of the rectangular restriction. Ens has a knack for maintaining artistic discipline while indulging in childlike flights of fancy, and the results are compelling.
